In 2026, CoreXY kinematics and Klipper firmware have become the new standard — and for the first time, they are available even in the lowest price brackets. In this article we recommend two printers: a basic machine for fast, reliable everyday printing, and a second one for true multi-material printing, where the model and its supports are printed from two different materials. For each category we also cover the alternatives, so the comparison stays fair.
Pick #1: Basic CoreXY with Klipper

Sovol SV08 — our pick
A machine built on the proven open-source Voron 2.4 design: linear rails on all axes, quad-gantry leveling, and most importantly vanilla, unlocked Klipper with full Moonraker and Fluidd access. No vendor-crippled fork — you can tune input shaping, write your own macros, and modify the machine freely. A generous 350 × 350 × 350 mm build volume, speeds above 500 mm/s, priced around $500–550. Elegoo Centauri Carbon — the cheapest enclosed option
An enclosed CoreXY at a price that simply didn’t exist until recently (~$300). A 350 °C hardened nozzle handles carbon-fiber composites, and the enclosure makes ABS and ASA printing reliable. Fully cloud-free (LAN/USB). The trade-off: the firmware is Klipper-based but considerably more locked down than the SV08. Details at Elegoo’s site.
Creality K1 SE — the middle ground
Priced between the two above (~$350). It runs Creality OS — a modified Klipper that can easily be rooted for full access. The dual-gear direct-drive extruder handles flexible filaments well, and a large community offers plenty of upgrades. It’s an open-frame design, so ABS requires a DIY enclosure.

Pick #2: Multitool & Multi-Material Printing

For printing a model and its supports from two different materials, the best mechanism is a toolchanger — each material has its own head with its own nozzle and temperature, so there is no purging and no cross-contamination of soluble supports. The alternatives are IDEX (two independent heads) and, at the cheapest end, single-nozzle filament changers — each with its own pros and cons.
Snapmaker U1 — our pick
The king of the category: a CoreXY machine with four independent toolheads, ~5-second tool changes, and up to 80% less waste than AMS/CFS-style systems. Each head holds its own temperature — ideal for PVA supports or PLA + TPU combinations. The firmware is open Klipper (open-sourced in March 2026), with Fluidd access directly over IP. Prusa XL — proven, but pricier
The original consumer toolchanger and still the benchmark of the category: up to 5 heads, large format, a segmented heated bed, and excellent support. The downsides for our budget: pricing from roughly $2,499, and custom firmware instead of Klipper. Details at prusa3d.com.
Sovol SV04 — the budget IDEX classic
Two independent direct-drive heads (IDEX), so it handles model + PVA supports from roughly $300, plus a large 300 × 300 × 400 mm build volume and duplication/mirror modes. The catches: it’s an older Cartesian design (no CoreXY), it ships with Marlin — Klipper only as a DIY mod — and it has been discontinued, so you’re hunting clearance stock or the used market. Still, it’s the cheapest ticket into two-material printing.
Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo — colors at a great price
The same base as the Centauri Carbon plus the CANVAS 4-filament system (~$449). For multi-color printing it’s an outstanding value — but it’s a single nozzle, so every material change means purging and a waste tower. For combining genuinely different materials (e.g. PETG + PVA) it’s therefore less suitable than a toolchanger or IDEX.
